For the best quality and highest oil yield, parts of the geranium should be distilled simultaneously with—or just before—the plant's flowering. When the plant is in full bloom, it is already too late to extract the maximum amount of oil (or sometimes any oil at all). This is why the rhizomes and leaves are harvested just before the plant flowers. During harvesting, only parts of the plant are removed; some leaves are left to aid regeneration.
