Why from Brazil?
We source our lemon essential oil in smaller quantities from Southern Brazil. The climate there is similar to the weather conditions in Southern Italy, so citrus fruits - like lemons - also grow well there.
Why from Italy?
Lemons grown in Italy's warm climate and fertile soils can reach the size of a small ball. The vast majority of essential oil extracted for doTERRA comes from the island of Sicily.
How It Works
The essential oil is found in the lemon peel. 75 whole lemons are needed to produce a 15 ml essential oil. Like many other citrus oils, lemon essential oil is produced from fruit discarded by the fresh fruit processing industry. Fresh lemons that cannot be sold in the fresh market due to bruising or other aesthetic defects are typically used to make juice and essential oil. This way, the juice and oil from the fruit can be used for two purposes immediately. The oil is extracted by "grating" the peel using a special tool (which scrapes the fruit's skin like a cheese grater). This grater-like tool is submerged in water, just enough to cover the blades, so that as they scrape the peel, the released oil goes into the water. At the end of the process, the fruit emerges as a completely peeled, bare ball. The oil is then separated from the water using a centrifuge, which processes it at least twice. The juice is pressed from the fruit after the peel/oil has been removed.
